Meeting November 19, 2009

Speaker: Charlene Whitaker
Topic: 2009 Winter Solstice

Charlene Whitaker is a well-known professional astrologer and metaphysician with more than thirty years experience in the field.  She is a counselor, teacher, lecturer, and writer.  She is the author of two well-known books, Gems of Wisdom and Candles, Mediation and Healing.  Charlene has been a participant in many radio and television talk shows, and lecturer at astrological conferences.   She is the founder and director of the Cosmic Academy of Metaphysical Arts in Canoga Park, a member of NCGR, and for eleven years a full-time teacher at the Carroll Righter Astrological Foundation.

The Winter Solstice is the time of the year when the Sun enters the sign of Capricorn.  Some astrologers feel that the Winter Solstice point emphasizes the potential for what the year ahead has to offer.  Since the Winter Solstice falls only 11 days before the New Year, it is something to consider.  Capricorn represents achievements, therefore we should reflect on the year past, and consider new decisions and priorities for the year ahead.

An ingress chart can be set for any location.  Charlene has chosen the charts for Washington, DC -- which indicates the conditions for the entire country, and Los Angeles, CA -- for a closer look at what to expect.  Our nation is experiencing troubled times.  Economic issues, a possible double-dip recession, an unemployment crisis, and war with other countries are areas of concern for us all.

Notes:  Carrows Restaurant has requested that we vacate the premises earlier than we have been, so please arrive as close to 6pm as possible so we can get to our speaker by 7:30pm.

We are always looking for interesting speakers or topics to be discussed, and are open to suggestions.  In the past, we have had some great parties, and we have gone to the racetrack (to test our astrological theories, of course) -- and some of us became fabulously wealthy.

The Carroll Righter Foundation had its annual Halloween party.  The costumes and food demonstrated just how creative astrologers can be.

Meeting October 15, 2009

Speaker: Brian Evis. Topic: "MARS - Ignore it at Your Peril!"

With all the emphasis on the heavy outer planets, we tend to forget what a quick, sharp impact Mars has when it suddenly makes an aspect in our chart.  Brian will be discussing some of the lesser known qualities of Mars, and its aspects that are often overlooked -- but which still sometimes have an upsetting impact.  He will discuss the larger Mars cycles and how they will be affected by Saturn moving into the relationship sign of Libra on October 29th, and what this will mean for relationships for the next two years,

For the 2nd half of the lecture, Brian will talk about how Mars turning Retrograde in Leo on December 20 through March 11, 2010 will play out in each of the twelve houses of everyone's chart.  To enjoy the lecture all you need to remember is what aspects Mars makes in your chart, and in which house 19 degrees Leo to 0 degrees Leo falls. Everyone will be affected to a greater or lesser extent!

Brian Evis is a Certified Professional Astrologer by the International Society for Astrological Research  (ISAR).  Since 1980, he has provided astrological counseling and consulting services for thousands of clients -- including many successful leaders in the fields of entertainment and business, and fellow astrologers as well.  He has been lecturing at the Los Angeles NGCR meetings once or twice a year since 2001.

Meeting Thursday, September 17

Carrows Restaurant: 18355 Ventura Blvd, Tarzana 818-343-0782

Speaker : Dan Khoury
Topic : Saturn's Journey through Libra and
I's Opposition to Uranus and Jupiter, and its Square to Pluto

Saturn's square to Pluto will be stressful as will it's opposition to Uranus and Jupiter. What will be the effects of this configuration? War, peace, changes in relationships? How will we be personally affected? Come and hear some interesting concepts regarding these upcoming events.

Dan began studying Astrology while in the army in South Vietnam 39 years ago. Beginning with Linda Goodman's sun sign book, he began his formal studies at the new age Philosophy center in Santa Monica. Most of his astrology is self-taught, but he has been attending the Carroll Righter Institute for the past 20 years, where he is a respected teacher. Dan has previously lectured at NCGR on understanding "Venus the Retrograde Cycles", "Pluto's entrance into Capricorn", and "The Astrological Symbolism in the Da Vinci Code"

Note: We should have our annual election, so all who wish to run for the following offices: President, Vice President, Treasurer and Secretary should think about being nominated at our September 17th meeting. The candidates must be members of N.C.G.R. We can nominate at this September meeting.

All are requested to arrive at the meetings as close to 6:00 PM as possible, so that we can get to our speaker in a timely fashion, bearing in mind that we have the room for a limited time.

Thank you to Nancy Schorr, our Webmaster, for this website. The address is . Please contact for Chapter information.

What is NCGR?

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of NCGR shall be to provide an environment to foster and publish research of a geocosmic nature and to pursue educational programs in various interdisciplinary fields related to geocosmic studies. The term "geocosmic" is defined as "of or pertaining to the study of correspondences and cycles involving earthly phenomena and cosmic (celestial) events." This purpose is implemented by: disseminating information through NCGR publications, including journals, newsletters, books or monographs; providing financial and technical assistance, guidance, or professional help to individuals or groups for approved research projects, sponsoring appropriate educational programs, chartering regional, semiautonomous chapters of NCGR having the same goals and purposes; promoting and encouraging the highest professional standard and ethical behavior among astrologers.

Description and History
National Council for Geocosmic Research, Inc., (NCGR), is a non-profit (501-C) organization incorporated in Massachusetts in 1971 for the purpose of raising the standards of astrological education and research. Its membership of about 2500 is mostly from the United States, though international membership is growing. Most members affiliate with NCGR's local chapters: at this writing 35 established and 4 forming in 26 states. Two international chapters are in Mexico and one is forming in Australia. Additionally, several Special Interest Groups (SIGs) cross wide geographical areas to foster dialogue among people of similar astrological specialties. NCGR annually publishes two magazines, Geocosmic Journal, and six newsletters, Memberletter, plus a Memberlist. A variety of other publications are produced intermittently.

From its 1979 launch in a seminar at Princeton University attended by delegates from chapters, NCGR developed and
implemented a 4-level education and testing program leading toward certification for astrologers. With the formation of the NCGR Professional Astrologers' Alliance (PAA) in 2008, this prior NCGR certification program is now transferred to the new organization in its entirety, based on the same educational curriculum as before. The newly-formed NCGR-PAA will now administer this highly respected certification program, which is both an outgrowth and a continuation of NCGR's historical Curriculum and Certification Program begun more than a quarter of a century ago.

Although NCGR does not require that its members be practicing astrologers, a Code of Ethics, to which members are accountable, provides guidelines for the practice of astrology, and every member is expected to abide by it.

To briefly summarize the history of NCGR, seven men and women met in Wareham, MA, on March 6, 1971, at the home of Harry F. Darling, M.D., who became the first Chairman. The official signing of the Articles of Incorporation took place at 9:02 pm. The founders included astrologers, medical professionals, scientists and scholars, all interested in exploring astrology as it related to other disciplines. The name they chose, Geocosmic, sought to avoid the popular misunderstanding of astrology and set the tone for their purpose with a serious and scholarly approach to the study of correspondences between life on earth (geo) and the cycles of the cosmos, in particular, that of our solar system.

The first three elected to head NCGR were medical doctors: Dr. Darling, followed by Henry Altenberg, M.D., and Donald Wharton, M.D. In 1980, Neil F. Michelsen, businessman and pioneer of computer technology for astrologers, became Chairman, followed by Robert Hand, prominent astrologer, author and software developer, and Maria Kay Simms, astrologer, author and businesswoman. The current chair is Madalyn Hillis-Dineen, astrologer, writer, and Marketing Director for Astrolabe Inc.
